Today's training session with Hypo Hound Nemo showed just how remarkable our dogs are, and the special bond they share with their child partners.
Nemo is usually quick to respond to commands. Today he was a little off. Something just wasn't right.
He alerted to his trainer and his mum again and again. Both checked with the staff and everyone in the store to make sure no one nearby was unwell. Nemo stayed distressed, so we put his welfare first and stopped the session. He was taken home.
Then came the text that explained everything.
Nemo's young partner was at nursery during the training. In that same window her blood sugars had dropped sharply, falling from 15.7 to 4.5 and refusing to climb back up. A drop like that is exactly the kind of dangerous change a Hypo Hound is trained to catch.
Nemo had sensed it. From a distance, while his partner was somewhere else entirely.
His mum will now contact the nursery whenever Nemo behaves strangely during a session, to check on her little girl.
We see this remarkable ability in our dogs often. What makes Nemo special is how quickly it has come, when this partnership is so newly matched.
Well done, super sniffer Nemo.
